Who usually asks about sedation
You don't need a diagnosis of dental phobia to want it. Plenty of people just want to get through a long visit calmly.
You've put off treatment for years.Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people end up needing implants in the first place.
You have a long procedure coming up.Full arch surgery or several implants in one visit is a lot of time in the chair.
You gag easily or can't sit still.Sedation can make treatment possible when it otherwise wouldn't be comfortable.
How a sedation visit works
Your safety drives which option you get, so the prep matters.
-
Health review
We go over medications, conditions and things like sleep apnea to decide which options are safe for you.
-
Prep instructions
You may need to skip food beforehand, and you'll line up someone to drive you.
-
Treatment
You're monitored the whole time. Local anesthetic still numbs the area, sedation handles the nerves.
-
Recovery
You'll feel drowsy for a while. Plan to rest the rest of the day.
What sedation is and isn't
It helps a lot. It's also medicine, so here are the ground rules.
It's not the same as being put under in a hospital. Depending on the level, you may be drowsy but still able to respond, and many patients remember little afterward.
You'll need a ride. For most levels you can't drive, and you shouldn't sign anything important the rest of that day.
Some health conditions limit options. Certain medications and medical history rule out some types of sedation. That's why the health review isn't a formality.
Sedation questions
Will I be asleep during sedation dentistry?
It depends on the level of sedation. Many patients feel deeply relaxed and drowsy and remember little of the appointment, without being fully unconscious.
Do I need someone to drive me home after sedation?
For most types, yes. Plan on a friend or family member taking you home and keeping you company for a bit.
Does sedation replace the numbing shot?
No. Local anesthetic still blocks pain in the area being treated. Sedation is for anxiety and comfort during the visit.
Is sedation safe if I have health conditions?
Often, but it depends on the condition and your medications. Bring a full medication list so the right option can be chosen.
